Some of character’s skill will turn the enemy into Prime State. And while the special moves look cool the first few times you see them, you end up doing them so often that they lose any of the impressiveness they might have had after the first level. Repeatedly mashing the same few attack buttons over and over again until you build up enough power to unleash a special move is not fun.
Every level you play – no matter which character you pick – basically boils down to the same few actions: run around, kill hordes of enemies, and then kill a few named heroic enemies to end the stage. Sengoku Basara allows you to play a number of fantastically re-imagined historical characters from Japan’s warring states period, taking them through a campaign in an effort to unite the country under one ruler. Sure, Samurai Heroes stands out for being better than the innumerable versions of the same basic game Koei’s put out, but that really isn’t saying much. This mindless hack and slash is yet another rendition of a formulaic gameplay design that’s been beat to death both in this franchise, and more notably in Koei’s various Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors games. Sengoku Basara perfectly underlines Inafune’s concerns.
After playing Capcom’s latest release, Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes, I can see why he’d say this. Vs mode is where both players or player and the AI are pitted against each other in one of 8 sub-modes. Tournament mode has the player go through 100 rounds of duels in order to unlock the 8th weapon and third armor for the character that the player is controlling. When player reaches every 500 combos, Player will automatically turn into Drive State for a period of time. Free mode is where the player can go back and replay any unlocked stages within the game. Conquest mode has the player as well as having a second player join in on selecting one of 30 playable characters (including the ones previously referenced) and going out of their way in try to conquer every territory within Japan. Gaiden mode has the player go through three stages as either Fūma Kotarō, Chōsokabe Motochika, Date Masamune, Maeda Keiji, and Sanada Yukimura. Story mode has the player play as either Azai Nagamasa, Katakura Kojūrō, and Oichi going through five stages. The game modes shown on the menu are Story mode, Gaiden (side story) mode, conquest mode, free battle mode, Tournament Mode, Versus Mode, and options mode just like most games.
